To help grow its international trade and customs group amid the rising complexity and rapid changes facing Canadian and multinational businesses within the global trade landscape, Gowling WLG has announced the appointment of Margaret Kim as Toronto-based counsel.
“Clients need timely, sophisticated guidance as developments unfold, particularly when they have significant commercial and operational consequences,” said Pierre Pilote, chair of the firm’s specialized practices department, in a news release. “Margaret’s arrival adds further depth to an already strong team equipped to respond to that demand.”
Gowling WLG highlighted Kim’s background in both private practice and public sector work, as well as her insight into the development, application, and real-world implications and impacts of trade and investment policy.
“Trade uncertainty has become a constant for businesses as tariffs, countermeasures, and policy shifts continue to alter the rules and conditions for cross-border activity,” Pilote said.

For the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General, she served as counsel to the deputy attorney general from April 2023 to July 2024 and as Crown counsel at the Ministry of Economic Development, Job Creation, and Trade beginning in March 2020.
Kim worked as an associate in the international trade and investment law group of Bennett Jones LLP from August 2017 to August 2020 and as an associate in the competition/antitrust, trade, and foreign investment group at Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP from August 2016 to July 2017.
She has earned JD degrees from the University of Ottawa and the American University Washington College of Law. At the University of Toronto – University of Trinity College, she holds an honours BA with high distinction as a double major in political science and ethics, society, and law.
