TD Bank Group has appointed Simon Fish as its new senior executive vice president and general counsel – one of several new names it is adding to its leadership team this month.

Fish replaces Jane Langford, who departs TD Bank Group at the end of the year. As a corporate lawyer, Fish brings experience in capital markets, banking, and financial regulation and enforcement.

He has worked across the mining, energy, and financial services sectors. He has handled matters in Africa, Europe, the US, and Canada.

Fish was BMO Financial Group’s general counsel for 13 years. In 2020, he transitioned to a role as special advisor to the CEO, where he advised on the development and implementation of BMO Financial Group’s sustainability strategy and ESG programs.

In 2021, he joined the board of advisors at Alexa Translations. He also recorded general counsel stints at Vale and Royal Dutch Shell.

Fish commenced with TD Bank Group on September 15, reporting to its group president and chief executive officer Raymond Chun.

Langford will stay with the company as special advisor to facilitate the transition before her exit. She was TD Bank Group’s general counsel for 3 out of her 13 years with the company.

During her tenure, she advised the CEO, board, and bank leaders. She supervised complex legal files and bolstered the company’s legal department. She also spearheaded TD Bank Group’s inclusion and diversity council.

Other leadership appointments

TD Bank Group also announced that Taylan Turan would be joining the company on September 29 as senior executive vice president and chief operating officer.

Turan has held leadership roles at Barclays and Citigroup. He was HSBC’s global CEO of retail banking and led the global integration of international wealth and premier banking.

Previously based in London, he will move to Toronto. Like Fish, Turan will report to Chun.

Moreover, Paul Whitehead will become TD Bank Group’s executive vice president and global head of client and colleague experience and marketing on December 1. He has been with the company for 37 years.

Before this promotion, Whitehead was the Canadian branch banking EVP. On taking up his new role, he will report to Turan.

Turan and Whitehead are taking on the responsibilities held by Christine Morris, senior executive vice president of transformation, enablement and customer experience at TD Bank Group. Morris is set to retire at the end of the year after 36 years with the company.
