Champion Iron Limited has named senior vice-president, general counsel, and corporate secretary Steve Boucratie its new chief legal and strategy officer.
In the new role, Boucratie will spearhead legal affairs while assisting with the company’s corporate strategy and long-term growth initiatives, according to Champion. He will continue to serve as corporate secretary.
He commenced with the company in 2019 as vice president, general counsel, and corporate secretary, contributing his corporate law, governance, and strategic advisory experience. He supported Champion’s legal, transactional and strategic initiatives, which included financings, acquisitions, and key corporate developments.
Boucratie was previously legal affairs director at Osisko Gold Royalties Ltd and a former partner at Fasken Martineau DuMoulin and Miller Thomson LLP. He also worked with Lavery Avocats as a lawyer.
He received his bachelor's degree in law from the Université de Montréal and obtained his DESS in transnational law (common law) from Université de Sherbrooke, according to LinkedIn.
In addition to Boucratie’s promotion, Champion also elevated Michael Marcotte to chief financial officer.
Marcotte started with the company as vice-president of investor relations in 2018 before becoming senior vice-president of corporate development and capital markets. He has spearheaded capital markets initiatives like successful financings as well as the review of growth opportunities and acquisitions.
He has a bachelor’s degree in business administration and was granted the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.

Their collaboration, leadership and deep understanding of our business will continue to be key assets for the company and enable us to consolidate key responsibilities within the existing executive team,” said David Cataford, Champion CEO, in a statement.
Champion operates in Canada and Norway as a high-purity iron ore producer. It owns the Bloom Lake Mining Complex via Quebec Iron Ore Inc. as well as Nordland-based Norwegian iron ore producer Rana Gruber AS, which yields about 1.8M dry metric tonnes of hematite and magnetite iron ore concentrates each year.
The company holds a 51 percent stake in the Kami Iron Mine Partnership owned by Nippon Steel Corporation and Sojitz Corporation.
