Former Chevron chief corporate counsel Matt Friedrich has been named the new chief legal officer of Galaxy Digital Inc. effective September 8.
Friedrich will lead the company’s global legal and compliance function, covering regulatory engagement, corporate governance, litigation, and public policy. He replaces Andrew Siegel, who had been Galaxy’s general counsel since 2017.
Friedrich will be part of Galaxy’s senior leadership team and report to founder and CEO Mike Novogratz.
“Matt is a critical addition to Galaxy's leadership team as we scale the business and drive innovation globally. With laws and regulations shifting around the world, his public- and private-sector experience will be key to expanding Galaxy's footprint and shaping the next chapter of digital assets and AI,” Novogratz said in a statement.
In addition to his tenure with Chevron, Friedrich was executive vice president and general counsel at Cognizant Technology Solutions, where he managed global legal, compliance, and government affairs functions. He was also previously a partner at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Boies, Schiller & Flexner, advising multi-national companies on cross-border investigations, litigation, and compliance matters.
He was once a federal prosecutor with the US justice department and acting assistant attorney general of the criminal division. With digital assets and AI moulding the financial services sector, Friedrich said he expected to apply his experience collaborating with multinationals to his new role.
Novogratz praised the contributions of Friedrich’s predecessor Siegel, noting that he had been key to Galaxy’s Nasdaq listing this year. Siegel had built the company’s legal and compliance team in addition to leading it.
Galaxy focuses on digital assets and data center infrastructure. It is headquartered in New York City but has established offices in North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
