Babin Bessner Spry LLP

Babin Bessner Spry LLP

Babin Bessner Spry is a boutique litigation firm that is active in a wide range of practice areas, including financial services and securities litigation, corporate governance issues (including director and officer liability), shareholder oppression litigation, fraud, competition, class actions, and advertising law.

We have extensive experience litigating securities and commercial disputes at all levels of court, both in trial and on appeal, as well as before administrative tribunals and through alternative dispute resolution. We also handle a variety of public interest and pro bono matters, including refugee claims, wrongful death by law enforcement, sponsorship disputes of a publicly-funded arts company and more.

The firm was founded in 2009 by Ed Babin, a senior partner for many years in the highly-rated litigation departments of two of Canada's pre-eminent law firms, Torys LLP and Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg LLP. Cynthia Spry joined the partnership in 2010, and Ellen Bessner joined in 2014, to form Babin Bessner Spry LLP. Michael Bookman joined the partnership in 2022, followed by Brendan Monahan in 2025 and Brittiny Rabinovitch in 2026.

We excel at complex, high stakes litigation. Our lawyers understand that disputes are not argued in a vacuum. Decisions in litigation often affect other aspects of our clients’ lives and businesses. We can navigate these decisions with you to help you achieve the best possible solution.

We believe that great lawyering is formed early, through meaningful work, collaborative teams, and mentorship. We support the training and development of students who share our commitment to excellence in advocacy, advice, and service.

Our lawyers are consistently recognized as among Canada’s best, by both our peers and leading legal publications.
