Association of Corporate Counsel invites feedback for law department management survey

The Association of Corporate Counsel is inviting international in-house legal departments to participate in its seventh Annual Law Department Management Benchmarking Survey.

The organization is seeking operational and financial data from legal departments of varying sizes and sectors. The survey findings will provide insights into demonstrating measurable business impact for general counsel and legal operations leaders.

The data collection process will focus on key performance indicators such as total legal spend as a percentage of company revenue, Internal versus external staffing ratios, the number of lawyers per billion dollars in company revenue, and legal technology spend. According to the ACC, the results will “equip leaders with the competitive benchmarks necessary to optimize the make vs. buy equation and improve ROI within their departments.”

“Our goal is to empower legal departments of every size to move beyond anecdotal evidence and toward concrete, actionable benchmarks. In an era where ‘doing more with less’ is the standard, having access to peer-group data isn’t just an advantage — it’s a necessity,” Jason Brown, ACC’s president and CEO, said in a statement.

The survey opened on February 9 and runs through April 10. Legal department leaders intending to participate may email [email protected] to obtain a secure link; collected data will be aggregated to protect contributors’ privacy and confidentiality.

The ACC will grant participating legal departments complimentary access to an exclusive interactive dashboard upon publication of the final report in mid-June. Dashboard users can sort results by industry, department size, and company revenue, enabling direct comparisons with relevant groups.

A webinar will be held after the report’s publication to discuss key findings and trends from seven years of data.

The ACC partnered with legal executive search firm Major, Lindsey, & Africa on the survey. Greg Richter, Major, Lindsey, & Africa’s partner and vice president, retained search, said the organizations had adjusted the survey to enhance participation.
