On June 1, 2024, Pembina Pipeline Corporation advanced the Cedar LNG project, Canada’s largest First Nation-owned infrastructure project, towards final investment decision (FID). The C$ multi-billion floating liquified natural gas (LNG) facility, located on the West Coast of British Columbia, is a “first of its kind” in Canada and a transformative step in the country’s energy transition.
Stikeman Elliott LLP acted as Canadian counsel to Pembina, continuing its role from earlier project stages including Pembina’s acquisition of a 50 percent ownership interest and related arrangements with the Haisla Nation.
Miller Titerle + Company represented the Haisla Nation, one of the key Indigenous partners in the project. Latham & Watkins LLP served as international project finance counsel to Pembina. Norton Rose Fulbright LLP acted as lenders’ counsel, both on the Canadian aspects of the transaction and in its role as international project finance counsel.
The Cedar LNG project is expected to make a significant contribution to global decarbonization by exporting LNG to Asian markets to displace coal, while helping partners progress toward net-zero 2050 goals.
